Inland Waterway Waste Transportation Opportunities for Scotland

Project Summary

The main aim of the project was to assess whether water based waste transportation in Scotland was a sustainable option to be promoted in the future. The project's final report concluded that the waterway network in Scotland can have significant environmental, social and economic benefits when used for the transportation of waste. This conclusion was based on consideration of previous research and life cycle analysis of a feasible case study designed after interviews with waste management professionals from all over Scotland.

Project Partners

The project was funded by Landfill Tax Credit from Edinburgh Environmental Partnership Grants Scheme Ltd and was guided by a Steering Group comprised of Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), the Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG) and City of Edinburgh Council (CEC).
