Waste Management in Edinburgh

Project Summary

The main aim of this project was to assist the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), the Scottish Waste Awareness Group (SWAG) and City of Edinburgh Council (CEC) with the development of future household waste management and minimisation programmes. An assessment of waste management practices was carried out in Edinburgh and eight cities in Europe, North America and New Zealand. Options for waste management in Edinburgh were then proposed by integrating aspects of successful schemes from the eight cities studied. A questionnaire was developed and sent to 864 households in Edinburgh to define public attitudes and expectations with regard to future waste management options. Based on the results of the questionnaire and the findings of the eight cities study, a final set of recommendations was put forward as to the future waste management infrastructure and education and awareness programme required.
