IN THE NEWS: Assessment of the Hydropower Resource in Scotland
The First Minister, Alex Salmond, opened the 100MW Glendoe Hydro Scheme near Fort Augustus on the 1st September, 2008. On the same day he used the event to publicise the fact that the newly completed report on the Hydropower Resources of Scotland has indicated that there would be at least a further 650 MW of available hydropower from mostly small-scale and micro schemes suitable for the direct supply of communities as well as for sale to the grid.
The report had been commissioned by the Forum for Renewable Energy in Scotland (FREDS) on behalf of the Scottish Government and was undertaken as a joint study between SISTech, Nick Forrest Associates and Black and Veatch.
The promise of further substantial hydro resources within Scotland has created interest in the national press, as indicated in the following articles from September 2nd: -
