5e in Universities Project

Project Summary

This was a collaborative programme involving 14 universities across Europe, with SISTech representing Heriot-Watt and Scotland, designed to investigate the use of electricity in electronic equipment and promote strategies to reduce consumption in the future. The study indicated that PCs and monitors alone consume 3.4 TWh/annum. However, 40% savings would be possible just through more carefully defined procurement practices and a further 35% saving would also be possible by power management controls i.e. a total of 75%. The report was put forward as a guide for future procurement and power management practices in the future by the university sector.
